Preventive practices and medical staff training essential to avoid transmission of infections & complications

UAE, September 22, 2015 – Under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Youssef Mohammed Al Serkal, Assistant Undersecretary for the Hospitals Sector, the Ministry of Health’s Committee of Infections Prevention and Control recently held a seminar on the prevention and control of hospital-acquired infections titled ‘Nosocomial Infections - Inflammation of the Wounds.’ Dr. Najiba Abdul Razzaq, Internal Medicine Consultant, Head of Internal Medicine Department of Al Baraha Hospital and Chairman of the Committee, supervised the seminar.

Lasting for four and a half hours, the event attracted more than 100 participants - including general surgery doctors, specialists and healthcare providers in the Ministry-run facilities – who discussed the fundamental practices preventing the spread of nosocomial infections.

Dr. Razzaq said the seminar was in response to the Ministry of Health’s directives ensuring the protection of all patients and healthcare facility employees through adherence with the highest safety standards. She emphasized its crucial role in raising the awareness of and educating those involved in the healthcare sector by providing detailed explanations on recognized preventive measures. Infections acquired in hospitals and health facilities have become a global issue and are considered one of the top 10 causes of deaths in developed countries.

H.E. Dr. Al Serkal, meanwhile, pointed out that health facilities are presently facing numerous challenges such as the spread of nosocomial infections and other infectious diseases caused by new microbes and bacteria as well as the lack of qualified personnel. H.E. underscored the need to create and provide successful means to put a stop to their transmission and avoid health-related complications.

H.E. Dr. Al Serkal emphasized that the Ministry of Health’s key objectives include fighting infections and providing better staff training. H.E. pointed out that control and prevention primarily depend on medical staff training, methods of infection prevention, and consolidation of concepts, policies and procedures adopted by international organizations. He assured the Ministry’s intensified commitment towards continuously delivering topnotch health and therapeutic services, providing all essential support and adopting safety measures according to the highest international standards to ensure the wellbeing of all patients and healthcare facility staff.

Severe complications resulting from nosocomial infections are among the main causes of deaths across the globe. In addition, hospital-acquired infections put a strain on the resources of healthcare institutions in terms of medicines and medical supplies necessary for diagnostic tests, among others. Many patients who fell ill from these diseases are also forced to be confined longer, thus increasing their hospital costs.
